GMC Jammu Hosts Workshop on Palliative Care Insights

Jammu, October 10, 2026: The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu took a major step towards enhancing palliative care by organizing a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program today. Titled “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care,” this session targeted the critical need for effective pain management techniques for individuals battling cancer and other life-limiting conditions.

Held at the college auditorium, the event drew approximately 130 participants, including consultants, postgraduate residents, and healthcare professionals from both district hospitals and private healthcare institutions. This significant turnout underscored a unified commitment to improving quality of life for patients facing severe illnesses.

An inaugural palliative care file showcased the commitment to strengthen palliative services at GMC Jammu. This initiative represents a systematic approach aimed at better catering to the needs of patients grappling with serious health issues.

Under the supervision of Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, the organizing committee included notable figures such as Dr. Rajesh Mahajan (Organising Chairperson), Dr. Madan Katoch (Co-Chairperson), and several others deeply involved in the field of palliative care.

The scientific agenda of the program featured engaging lectures and interactive panel discussions covering pivotal topics like pain assessment and management, judicious opioid use, and holistic approaches to palliative care. The focus remained on compassionate communication and individualized treatment, fostering teamwork among multidisciplinary healthcare providers aimed at alleviating the myriad forms of suffering experienced by patients.

Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini efficiently anchored the program, ensuring a seamless flow of content throughout the sessions. A notable highlight was a poster competition themed “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful.” This initiative encouraged students and residents to creatively express their understanding of palliative care, emphasizing dignity, comfort, and quality of life in the final stages of life.

The CME concluded on a promising note, reaffirming the necessity of integrating palliative care practices into regular clinical routines. The commitment to timely pain relief and dignified care for patients with serious illnesses remains a shared goal amongst all attendees.
